What are Amps, Volts and Watts?

Amps - The Flow of Electricity

Think of electricity like water flowing through a hose. Amps measure how strong this flow is. More amps mean a stronger flow, like when you turn on a garden hose, and water gushes out fast.

Example: If a device uses 5 amps, it's like saying it lets 5 units of electrical water flow through it.

Volts - The Pushing Power

Now, volts are like the "push" behind electricity. Imagine it as how hard you press the hose trigger to make water flow. If you press lightly, the water barely comes out. But if you press hard, the water comes out strong. In electricity, higher volts push the current harder.

Example: In the U.S., most outlets have 120 volts. When you plug in your phone charger, it uses 120 volts to send electricity into your phone.

Watts - The Energy Measure

Now, let's mix Amps and Volts to make Watts. Watts are how we measure electrical power. It's like adding up all the work done. In our hose example, watts tell us how much water comes out. So, if something uses a lot of watts, it's using more electrical power.

Example: Think of a hairdryer. If it works at 120 volts and uses 10 amps, you can find its power:

Watts = Amps x Volts

Watts = 10 A x 120 V = 1200 W

This means the hairdryer uses 1200 watts of power to blow hot air.

Understanding Amps, Volts, and Watts helps you use your appliances safely and even save money on electricity bills.
